What is the archive?
The Conference of Socialist Economists have
made the entire back catalogue of Capital & Class available
on-line. Every article or book review we have published since
the journal was founded in 1977 is now here as a pdf file.
There are over 2000 full articles, Behind the News pieces,
polemics and book reviews available to read on screen or print
out.
Who can access the archive?
The Capital & Class Archive is freely available
to all individual subscribers of Capital & Class, all
of whom are CSE members. You need to register a username and
password at the bottom of the subscriptions
page and access will be set up with in two working days.
You can subscribe on-line with by
credit card over a secure connection.
Anyone using a computer in a library that subscribes
to Capital & Class, and has registered their IP range
with us, will automatically have access, without having to
enter a password. Here is a list of subscribing
institutions. If you think your library should give you
automatic access, but it doesn't work then it might be one
of two things. Either the IP range is wrong (the IP address
of the computer you are using is displayed at the bottom of
the screen informing you that the access did not work), or
the library has not yet registered their IP address with us.
All subscribing libraries should contact
us to arrange automatic access.
What format are the articles in?
The files are all high quality pdf files. They
are designed to print out sharply and clearly. They all have
a text file behind the image, so you can search the pdf file
for a word or phrase. You can then copy and paste sections
of the text. You can also use the image selection tool to
extract tables and charts.
Issues 1 to 42 have been scanned in and put
through a text recognition program, so they come out as a
larger file size. Issues 43 onwards have been converted to
pdf file electronically, allowing for smaller file sizes.
The overall quality and functions available on these files
is much higher than is usually found from document supplier
firms.
Where can I see abstracts of the articles?
All the abstracts of the articles can be seen
by going to the Back Issues page
and clicking on the issue that the article is in. This brings
up the contents page of the issue, with title, author and
abstract. If you do a search the results include the abstract,
or part of the abstract if it is very long. This enables you
to check if it is really what you are looking for, before
downloading the file.
For the book reviews, the abstract contains
the list of all the books reviewed in that issue, and who
they were reviewed by.
How do I use the search engine?
The search engine
searches the entire text of the article, so it can search
for key words or subjects that you are interested in. To use
it, type the word in the box and click search. The word could
be the authors name, the name of the article, or the subject.
The stars by the results indicate relevance or good matches.
For example if the word comes up in the title or abstract.
The options along the top can be used as follows:
Match: If you chose 'all' then it only brings
up results which contain all of the words you have typed.
Similarly, 'any' shows results which contain any of the words
you have typed. The 'Boolean' option supports the use of AND,
OR, NOT and the use of "quotation marks".
Format: The 'short' option will bring up the
title of the article only. The 'long' option brings up the
title of the article, the author and the abstract for that
article.
Search in: This determines whether you only
want to search the actually articles that have been published,
in which case you choose 'Back Issues Archive', or you want
to search the whole CSE site. Searching the whole CSE site
will look through the other web pages, so the results could
include conferences we have supported, details of the Capital
& Class editorial board and such like.
Is there a complete list of all your articles?
Yes, you can find it here
sorted by year of publication. Or if you have Endnotes software,
you can download the Endnotes file of all our articles.
Sorry. The Endnotes download is still being
developed. Please check again at a later date.
Can I photocopy these articles?
Copyright rules apply to all the files in this
archive. All users need to agree to the terms
and conditions before accessing the files.
